Readings: Matthew 1:18-19 and Psalm 80

Pay particular attention today to Psalm 80.

The Psalm is built around similar refrains in vs 3, 7, 14 and 19

Restore us, O God; make Your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
Return to Us, O God Almighty! Look down and see
Restore us, O Lord God Almighty; make Your face shine upon us, that we may be save

It is the language of hope…

                                         waiting…

                                                       expectation…

                                                                            anticipation…

                                                                                                longing…

                                                                                                              yearning…

                                                                                                                              hunger…

                                                                                                                                           it is the language of advent.

God’s people waited for the promised One who would deliver them from bondage and captivity. He came and delivered; He came and brought freedom.

Let’s not forget that part of Advent is the reminder that as He once came so He will come again. That we are still a people waiting… yearning … anticipation.

Father, form us into men and women who long with the same longing,

hope with the same hope, and yearn with the same desire that captured the hearts of your people.
