Day 17

Readings: Luke 2:13-15, Psalm 71, Is 42:6-7

Nothing about Jesus birth was powerful. The idea that the shepherds are gathered to the trough of Jesus seems to contrast all of Psalm 71, “O Lord I have come to you for protection…”

In some ways it’s even amazing that we have an account of Jesus birth. It is so upside down from the impression that we are given in some of the Old Testament writing of a political ruler, a military force, or a conquering hero. It’s too unlikely and illogical a place for the place of power and authority.

But then, time and time again Jesus seems to buck the expectations we all have, and shows us another way, a higher way, that even today we struggle to understand and live out.

I, the LORD, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness.
I will take you by the hand and guard you,
and I will give you to my people, Israel,
as a symbol of my covenant with them.
And you will be a light to guide the nations.
7 You will open the eyes of the blind.
You will free the captives from prison,
releasing those who sit in dark dungeons.

Father, let the logic of this world be shed from our eyes. Help us to see the strength in weakness, and the glory of humility. You came in such a low manner that we probably would have missed you. Help us to find the power and authority that we look for only in you. Amen.
